From Commitment to Confidence: A Real Conversation About Growth and Discipline

Sponsored Feature in Partnership with Retro-fit Studio.

The Day They Decided to Walk In

Growth rarely starts with a perfect plan.

Most of the time it starts with a decision. A small one. The kind that doesn’t feel like much in the moment but turns out to change everything.

That’s exactly what happened with Mireil and Chantelle.

The two sisters were already out for a run in Fair Oaks the day they passed Retro-Fit Studio. They had already committed to joining the military, which means this wasn’t a story about finding motivation. They had that. They were getting up, putting in the miles, and doing what they thought would help them prepare.

But they were mostly figuring it out on their own.

No real structure. No one watching how they moved or telling them what to build first. Just effort and hope that it was enough.

On their way back that day, they noticed the studio.

And instead of running past, they slowed down, looked inside, and walked in.

That small decision is what changed everything.

A Coach Who Actually Sees You

Inside, they met Peggy Perez, a Fair Oaks fitness coach and the owner of Retro-Fit Studio.

What stood out right away wasn’t her energy or the equipment. It was the way she paid attention.

She watched how they moved. She noticed where they were strong and where something wasn’t quite right. She asked questions. She listened. And before she pushed anything, she took the time to understand what actually needed to be built first.

At one point, she said something I keep thinking about:

“They didn’t need more effort. They needed direction.”

That’s a simple sentence, but it holds a lot.

Because most people who are stuck aren’t stuck because they’re lazy. They’re stuck because they’re working hard without a clear target, and over time that wears on you. You start to wonder if what you’re doing is actually working or if you’re just going through the motions.

Peggy was nominated for Best of Fair Oaks in 2024, and after hearing how she works with people, that makes complete sense to me. Her approach isn’t about pushing you to your limits on day one. It’s about building strength the right way so you can keep going long after the initial excitement wears off.

She also looks at the bigger picture. Through her study of brain health and how people develop habits and resilience, she connects the physical work to how your mind responds to it. She’s not just counting reps. She’s helping people understand their own bodies, trust themselves under pressure, and build the kind of confidence that shows up everywhere, not just in the gym.

Training With Purpose

What I kept coming back to in my conversation with these sisters is that they weren’t starting from zero.

They were already disciplined. Already committed to something bigger than themselves. Already doing the work.

But without structure, even the most motivated person can start to feel like they’re spinning their wheels.

That’s what changed when they started working with Peggy.

Everything had a reason. They weren’t just doing workouts. They were understanding why each piece mattered and how it connected to the goal they were actually working toward.

And when that click happens, progress starts to feel different. Less frantic. More steady.

The Physical Shift

The results showed up.

Their upper body strength built up in a way they could feel. Push-ups became more controlled. Pull-ups, which most people never get to, started becoming something they could actually do.

Core strength followed. What had felt difficult to maintain became something they could repeat consistently, set after set.

Their running changed too. Not just longer distances, but more efficient movement, better pacing, and faster times.

But honestly, the physical progress wasn’t the most important part of what I heard.

The Moment That Stuck With Me

Mireil shared a moment during training that I haven’t forgotten.

She was in the middle of a set when her body started to shake. Her first instinct was to stop, which, same. That’s what most of us do.

But this time, she understood what that shaking actually meant.

It didn’t mean she was done. It meant she was working.

Once you understand that, something shifts. You stop running from discomfort and you start recognizing it as information. And that changes how you show up, not just in a workout, but in anything hard.

More Than Fitness

This isn’t really a story about push-ups and pull-up numbers, though both happened.

It’s about what’s available on the other side of asking for help.

As their training continued, people around them started to notice. They were showing up differently, carrying themselves differently, and sharing what they were going through.

When one of them reached the moment of being sworn in, Peggy was there.

Not just as a coach watching from the sidelines. As someone who had been part of the process from the very beginning.

That says a lot about the kind of coach she is.

Listen to the Full Conversation

I sat down with Mireil, Chantelle, and Peggy to talk through the whole story, from what it felt like in the beginning, to what changed, to what keeps you going when things get hard.

If any part of this resonated with you, I think you’ll appreciate hearing it in their own words.

A Gentle Nudge, If You Need One

If you’ve been thinking about your own next step, whether that’s your health, a goal you keep putting off, or something bigger you haven’t quite named yet, you don’t need to have it all figured out first.

Sometimes it starts exactly like it did for Mireil and Chantelle.

You notice something. You slow down. And you walk in.
