Boys of Summer Eagles Tribute Comes to Fair Oaks

September 30, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

From left to right – Richard Berglund, Chris Turbis, Darrel Monson, David A. Williams, and Jimmy Williamson on drums. Chrysti Tovani Photography

We ended the 2018 summer concert series with the most anticipated Boys Of Summer Eagles tribute band at the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival in the historic Fair Oaks Village.

Chrysti Tovani Photography

Tickets were sold out! It was a full house.  I adore hanging out with fellow Fair Oakians! All these familiar faces and people I’ve come to know and love. Fair Oaks is indeed a beautiful town. The crown of the Sacramento Valley. =) For sure!

Chrysti Tovani Photography

I think the Eagles fans outnumbered most other bands that played at the Veterans Memorial Amphitheatre this summer.  Either that or they heard how great the Steelin’ Dan concert was and bought tickets to this one. This photo was taken just before all the dancing started. I got up and stood to the right of the stage to get some pictures. People were having a great time dancing to the classics.

Well, that was the last of our summer concerts. We’ll surely buy tickets for next year. See what’s on the calendar for the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival by visiting their website. You can even purchase your tickets online which is the best way to make sure you get in before they sell out.

Fair Oaks Chicken Festival 2018

September 22, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

The Fair Oaks Recreation & Park District did an excellent job with the 13th Annual Fair Oaks Chicken Festival! I arrived early at 10 AM and this is what the street looked like. It was well attended.

There was live music on main stage, cluck n’ crow contest, craft brew tasting, 100+ vendors, SactoMoFo food court, pancake breakfast, kid’s park, kid’s entertainment, and so much more. The crowd hadn’t yet gathered to listen to the music. It was still morning so people were still arriving. The park is just beautiful.

How We Found One of the Best Veterinarians in Fair Oaks, CA

September 1, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

My cat Bailey in his carrier on the way to Mercy Animal Hospital in Fair Oaks

What do you do when your pet needs emergency care?

Well, usually, we are in the midst of being traumatized ourselves and don’t have a clue what to do or who to call. Who do we call? How do we keep everyone calm and make rational decisions? How much is this going to cost? We want the best care of course. We want our precious fur baby to be okay. Oh my gosh! It’s just awful to go through an ordeal with our loved ones. And to most of us, our pets are our babies. They are important family members. To see them in shock or pain is just unimaginable. Be prepared and have a plan. Just like kids, or anyone. Pets can have an accident. Even inside the home.

I’m going to tell you a tale about a cat that lost his tail.

Bailey, our sweet, ginger cat, was in the home office with my husband. They usually spend time together while the hubby collects his game bonuses and checks his facebook after he gets home from work. When they were coming out of the room, Bailey walked through the door as my husband was closing it and his tail got snagged near the door hinge. My husband says, he didn’t hear anything, but he looked down to see Bailey laying on the floor looking dazed and confused. The tip of his tail was also on the floor, and the tip of the bone exposed on his tail. Are you cringing?  Imagine being there. It’s common for cats to have accidents involving their tails. It’s called a tail degloving injury.

I was in the living room texting a lender about an upcoming open house when I hear my husband come running down the hall hollering, “Oh my God! Oh my God!” I went to find out what was up and it was like being in a dream state. Bailey was calm, but like he didn’t know what happened. My husband was hysterical. There was some blood but not a lot. Bailey reached up for me to pick him up and I did. Holding him and patting his back like I usually do. I was trying to think of who to call. The clinics were probably closed. I tend to be calm in the midst of chaos. I’m a Realtor. =) Well, I’m a mom too.

Fortunately, we have Facebook and hundreds of people to reach out to with one post, so I asked my friends, “Where is the nearest 24-hour vet emergency clinic in Sacramento?” Someone referred us to the VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center. We put Bailey in his carrier and off to the hospital we went.

Just like any emergency room or clinic that you’re walking into, it’s going to be hit or miss with how well you feel that you are treated and if they seem to care or are overworked and disinterested. Emergency visits are much more expensive than a regular vet visit.

Of course, our pets are priceless. I wasn’t feeling comfortable with the staff who greeted us, but I can’t say if it was them or me because I was not in the best frame of mind dealing with the whole situation. We got Bailey comfortable, and they said it would be okay if we took him to his regular vet first thing in the morning because he would probably need surgery. I had already made it clear that I wasn’t going to allow them to do it. It felt like they were all about the money and less about being caring. The cost of an exam is $143 at VRC and $50 for a pain shot.

Our trusted regular vet is Mercy Pet Hospital located in Fair Oaks, CA

They are friendly and make you feel awesome. When we had to have our 16-year-old cat put down, it was one of the hardest things, and they were so respectful of our pain. They even sent us a condolence card signed by the whole staff. When Bailey came into our life, Mercy Pet Hospital became his vet clinic. There are two locations. One in Citrus Heights and one in Fair Oaks.

Mercy Pet Hospital, we take pride in our commitment to provide you high quality veterinary care at affordable prices.

They do provide quality care. Exams are about $45. In my experience, with two cats at different times and both locations. I’ve had excellent service. I didn’t have a Dr. per say, but the clinic was good. Then we met Dr. Lennon.

Usually, I’ve gotten whichever vet is available, until… Dr. Lennon.

Dr. Caitlyn Lennon, DVM – Fair Oaks walked into a very stressful situation like a ray of loving light. Kind and gentle spoke in a friendly tone and made us all feel calm and safe. She was fully present while spending her time with Bailey and us. You can tell that she is passionate about caring for animals. Her bio states:

Dr. Lennon knew she wanted to be a veterinarian since she could properly pronounce the word at 5 years old.

You must read her inspiring bio. She’s like the country doctor everyone loves. She started working at the front desk of Mercy Pet Hospital on the first day it opened. That was before she went to school to become a veterinarian. I think it’s incredible that she is now a Doctor at the same clinic. I cried a little when I thanked her for helping us and making us feel like we were in good hands.

Scared little guy in his carrier.

So our little guy had surgery to remove a portion of his tail. He hated the cone so much that he was throwing tantrums, hissing, trying to get it off.  I would suggest a donut collar if you ever find yourself in a situation like this. I ended up taking the thing off and paying attention so that he didn’t chew on the stitches. We were lucky that he left it alone and healed up quite nicely.

cat pissed off about wearing the cone
His fur hasn’t grown back yet. He’s a short tail kitty.

You can find out more about Dr. Lennon and Mercy Pet Hospital by visiting their website.

Don’t wait until you have an emergency to find a clinic and a Veterinarian that you trust. Be prepared. Even indoor cats can have serious injuries. Find a veterinarian that you trust before you need one.

Great Night with Steelin’ Dan at the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival

August 20, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

Brad and I attended the Steelin’ Dan concert at the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival. This is one Tribute band you don’t want to miss! Sandford Wragg’s vocals and his stage presence will have you hooked. His performance of songs like Reelin’ in the Years was so on point. The whole band is fantastic! These are top notch musicians you’d expect to see at a stadium or large venue.

We were fortunate to have a chance to see them at the Veterans Memorial Amphitheatre and then hang out with them at Stockman’s after the show. I got to talk to Sanford, and he was friendly and humble. Poor guy was probably exhausted, but the fans were pumped about how great the concert was so he and the band stayed awhile and hung out with everybody who went over to the bar. I was too shy to ask to have a photo with him because I REALLY wanted one!  Oh well, I have the memories of a fun night!

Taco, beer and margaritas fest in the Village Park

August 18, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

Tacos from #ZintzuniCocinaMexicana at the Taco, beer and margaritas fest in the Village Park in Fair Oaks. Oh boy! We got lucky! We parked off of Sunrise and took a Lfyt to the Village. Then went to the first Taco truck because there wasn’t a big line. That was smart. And we had the best tacos. Then we got a table in front of the Fair Oaks Coffee House & Deli.

We strolled through the park and took photos. Watched people and listened to music.  I read an article in the Sac Bee awhile back about how some Sacramento area people (even as close as Citrus Heights) don’t know about the Village in Fair Oaks. How can that be possible?  It’s called Fair Oaks Village, Old Fair Oaks, or Historic Fair Oaks.

Fair Oaks is one of the best places to live in the Sacramento area. It’s called the Crown of the Sacramento Valley. It’s near the American River and there are bike and horse back riding trails. A beautiful community.

A gorgeous August day.

Village Salon, the art of hair.

August 17, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

Hello, my Fair Oaks lovelies! I am excited to introduce you to Rebekah, owner of Village Salon, located at 10145 Fair Oaks Blvd, Fair Oaks, California.

I am a regular customer at the Village Salon. My stylist is Crystal who is AMAZING! From what I’ve seen, all of the stylists at Village Salon are talented, established, and continue their education to stay on top of trends. It’s an enjoyable experience every time I get my hair cut and styled. Rebekah was so kind and friendly when I approached her about featuring the salon. We had a lot of fun!

Brianna May Rosalind did some very artistic photography, and I took some photographs of Rebekah while she was working. We did a Q & A style interview. I hope you enjoy!

How would you describe your business?

We are a unique salon located in the heart of the historic old town of Fair Oaks Village. We focus on making sure our clients leave happy and maintaining a high level of professionalism that, you don’t always experience these days. Nothing is more personally rewarding than helping people feel good about themselves and the way they look!

What made you decide to open your business?

I was intrigued by the beauty industry from a young age. It became a passion. By my teens & the early twenties, I was already selling skincare and cosmetics for Estée Lauder at Macy’s followed by MAC Cosmetics at Nordstrom.

After I graduated from cosmetology school, I chose to apprentice and work for one of the top salons in town for about five years. After that, I moved to self-employment station rental in another salon for a short time. I was so busy and had so many clients that it got the wheels in my head turning. My father is a successful entrepreneur, and he always encouraged me to think big. I had a lot of hairdresser friends with the same ethics, level of training and professionalism that I have. Found the right spot and decided to go for it. I’m glad I did because it thrived.

Do you do any personal styling or weddings?

Wedding parties, proms, and school dances are regular here. We have over a dozen stylists who passionately specialize their own areas. From weddings & special events to precision cuts to crazy fashion colors to classic long hair to top quality lengthening extensions, we do it all! I could go on and on about everything we do. The best part is, edgy or conservative; we have the perfect fit for anyone.

What made you decide to choose Fair Oaks?

I moved to Fair Oaks from Folsom when I was almost 17. I started out doing hair at a salon about 5 miles down the road. Fair Oaks and the surrounding areas are where the majority of my clients live. I also have many clients that make the drive out from a lot further away, so I like that Fair Oaks isn’t far from Highway 50 and Highway 80.  I like to joke that Fair Oaks has all the salons like Fulton Ave has all the car dealerships. I have a lot of immediate family and friends here.

What do you think your customers love the most about coming to your salon?

Clients have told me stories about past bad experiences of going into salons and the front desk or staff seemed snooty, catty or intimidating. We’re not like that at all! I receive many compliments on how friendly our team is! We really try our best to work together to make sure every client is greeted immediately upon walking in the door. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable. Coming into our salon is like entering our home. It doesn’t feel corporate. It has good energy and warm hospitality. Our salon is neat because you get the upscale, fancy salon atmosphere mixed with the charming old town quaint shops, boutiques and eateries.

What is one of your favorite local spots to spend time?

My personal all-time favorite place to frequent in the Fair Oaks Village is Carmelita’s Mexican Restaurant!  It’s an enjoyable and different restaurant! The exotic-eclectic decor, upbeat Latin Jazz, and the breezy hilltop patio are all so delightful to me. Their menu has a lot of variety, delicious appetizers and beautiful plates. They make great diet-friendly cocktails too. I have a lot of great memories at Carmelita’s.

Wrap Up:

You can visit the Village Salon at 10145 Fair Oaks Blvd. in Fair Oaks, California. Located in the Fair Oaks Village where the chickens roam. The phone number of the Salon is 916-961-8900.

A Special Tea Shop in Fair Oaks

July 23, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

Here’s a hidden gem in Fair Oaks. Of course if you’re part of the Chamber of Commerce or you attend the taste of Fair Oaks every year at the Northridge Country Club then surely you know Nautilus Tea Company. If you haven’t, you’re in for a treat.

Nautilus Tea Company is a Tea Bar, located in the Orchard shopping center at Fair Oaks Blvd. and Madison. They have specialty tea by the cup or pot, tea beverages such as tea lattes and chai lattes, tea in bulk and accessories.

My favorite is the Red Berries – over ice.

Doesn’t that look like a thirst quencher?

Red Berries – apple, elderberries, currants, blackberries, raspberries, sour cherry pieces, hibiscus and rosehips.

Streets of Bakersfield in Fair Oaks

July 21, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

If you haven’t been to a Fair Oaks Summer Concert in the park, you need to go! I thought it would be crowded but there were just the right amount of people and the parking wasn’t too bad. We arrived a little early and I got my keto friendly sandwich at the Fair Oaks Coffee House and Deli.

The village is small so one thing you can do to avoid looking for parking is to take a Lyft or Uber and get dropped off. I do that whenever I have to go downtown.

It’s a real family affair. There are food booths where you can buy pizza and snacks. There’s also ice cream and root beer floats. Kids can run around and play on the slides ans swings. There’s a designated dance floor if you want to get up and move your feet to the beat.  Good times!

Robby James and the Streets of Bakersfield is a tribute band that performs a bakersfield sound with songs by Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and other classic country singer/songwriters. They put on a great show at the Fair Oaks concerts in the park in July 2018.
