Puttin on the Dog for Yappy Hour at Shangrila Fair Oaks

November 5, 2019 By Chrysti Tovani

Bring the whole family to enjoy the child and dog-friendly patio paradise with bocce ball and fire pits. Shangrila Fair Oaks is the neighborhood hotspot in Fair Oaks Village.

To celebrate Halloween, Shangrila Fair Oaks teamed up with Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter for “Yappy Hour!”

Sacramento Front Street Animal Shelter – Adoptable Dogs

People brought their dogs dressed in costumes for happy hour. There were games and face painting along with tables where you could purchase items for your pets and donate money to Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter.

There were dogs and kittens available for adoption. I hope they found good homes. The little dog who was blind was so sweet and just loved being held.

Kitten from Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter

This Standard Poodle dressed in prison stripes was the sure winner of the costume contest. I have a confession. I was drawn over to the bar and ordered a hamburger and socialized. So I didn’t take pictures of all the activities. I didn’t even take a picture of my food. It was so delicious and I was having good conversations. Shangrila Fair Oaks is a fun place! They have signature cocktails that are refreshing. Ask the bartender.

The dogs were social and seemed to have fun too!

Sommer Peterson has done a wonderful job transforming the old mortuary into a beautiful place to hang out. It was featured on KCRA’s Word of Mouth. Watch the video here. https://www.kcra.com/article/word-of-mouth-shangri-la-sacramento/29864287# My friends, Jessica Briggs, from Blog About it All, and Ashley Newell were guest stars. It was exciting to see them on TV.

Paperback Writer Concert in Fair Oaks

October 11, 2019 By Chrysti Tovani

The Beatles tribute band, Paperback Writer, was a hit at the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival. The concert began with songs from the early 1960s. The band dressed in dark suits with the Beatle hair cut, also known as the mop-top as they wore on the Ed Sullivan show.

A large audience came out to watch the concert. It was amazing! Many happy faces enjoying the show. Under the stars with a half-moon shining so bright. A gorgeous night! Perfect weather and great music! I think many of us are lost in nostalgia when we hear the Beatles songs. It brings me back to my childhood.

The second half of the Beatles experience took us on a journey through the Sgt. Pepper’s years. “When I’m 64, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, and my favorite, “Hey Jude.”

Instead of lighters, people in the audience swayed to the music with their cell phones being used as lights. It was beautiful! I wished I had captured it. Thanks to the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival and Fair Oaks Brew Pub for bringing us another spectacular evening of entertainment.

Fair Oaks Theatre Festival – Steelin’ Dan in Concert 2019

June 5, 2019 By Chrysti Tovani

Steelin Dan performing at Fair Oaks Theatre Festival in Fair Oaks, CA
Steelin Dan performing at Fair Oaks Theatre Festival in Fair Oaks, CA

The summer of 2019 season of the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival has begun! Kicking off with a sophisticated rock and funky jazz sounds of Steelin’ Dan – the Music of Steely Dan. I enjoyed them so much last summer when they played at the Veterans Memorial Amphitheatre in Fair Oaks, CA.

It was a beautiful evening that began with a colorful sunset. Pinks & violets in the sky would later be an indicator of coming showers. There was this chicken so content with the crowd. Even sitting in laps and on shoulders. It walked through as people danced and also got up on stage and walked around the band as they played before finding a comfy spot to roost. It was the neatest thing.

It rained. There was a flash of lightning in the sky, and Sandford said that if it starts raining, you will see a bunch of musicians running off the stage. Well, it didn’t shower right away, but in the middle of a great set, we started to feel a drop, then another. Still dancing. Nobody wanted to acknowledge it, and the band played on as long as they could. When the drops starting coming down bigger and faster, we knew it was time to call it quits.

The band said that they would have loved being on Fair Oaks Live before the show. So, we did the next best thing. We walked over to Stockman’s in Fair Oaks Village. It was busy, but we found a booth and Sandford joined us. He’s one impressive dude. Wow!

I wish we had more time with the band members. All of them are wonderful and talented. I’m sure they are as exciting too. So often the lead singer gets the attention, and I think that’s why Sandford emphasizes that there are no prima donnas in the band.

Several of the band members also teach music.

Sanford teaches high school English and a culinary arts class to HS seniors. Both of his parents were college professors. He spent about 30 years working in the restaurant business and did well for himself, but he decided that he wanted to offer more by teaching.

The band enjoys playing together and feel like it’s a bonus that people want to pay them to do what they love.

I think you will enjoy listening to the interview and if you stick around to the end, you’ll see the chicken too.

It was a fantastic night! If you get a chance to see Steelin’ Dan perform, do it! Visit the Steelin’ Dan website and find out where they’re playing next. They have an interesting Facebook page with videos and an Instagram page for you to connect with.

Fair Oaks Fiesta 2019

May 15, 2019 By Chrysti Tovani

If you’re from the Sacramento region, you’re probably familiar with the local festivals. Now that we have a large number of people moving to Sacramento from San Francisco, San Jose, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and well, escaping the bay so to speak. I’ll give you the scoop like you’re new in town.

In the spring we have the Fair Oaks Fiesta, It’s organized by the Fair Oaks Chamber of Commerce each year and is solely supported 100% by our community and business members that are all volunteers. It literally takes a village to put this put this event together. And a village we are.

The day is filled with fun activities and vendors with cool stuff to purchase. Food trucks too! The street in the village is lined on both sides by Classic cars. It starts off with a pancake breakfast at the community clubhouse. And you ain’t seen nothin’ if you miss the toilet bowl races!

The Governor of California lives in Fair Oaks. I heard a rumor that the Gavin Newsom was walking among us incognito. Wouldn’t that be something? I don’t know if he really did that or not. What a bummer to live here in beautiful Fair Oaks and not be able to walk around the park and enjoy the festivities. I would slap on a baseball cap and sunglasses too.

It was a fantastic! Music from the ’50s and ’60s could be heard all over. The weather was cool and breezy with clear blue skies. A perfect day!

I arrived just as Assemblyman Kevin Kiley was giving the opening remarks and started taking pictures of the Chamber of Commerce Leaders.

Toilet Bowl Race 2019

The toilet bowl races were hilarious. How do they stay on so well? It’s crazy to watch.

There were so many great booths to visit.

The Housewives of Fair Oaks Glasses are a must-have! I’m going to stop by the Mail House and pick some up for myself and maybe for housewarming presents for my Fair Oaks homebuyers. (My sister worked as a casting producer on BRAVO. She helped cast the Housewives. I’m not kidding.)

Do you have a baby shower coming up soon? You must visit Nana’s Gone Loopy. Her stuffed animals, bags, and blankets are made for comforting little ones. Easy to keep clean and ready to be drooled on. This will be your baby’s security blanket.

Fair Oaks Eco Housing Community Almost Sold Out

February 11, 2019 By Chrysti Tovani

I had to pleasure of attending a gathering to go look at the new Fair Oaks Eco housing community that’s currently under construction at 4025 New York Ave, in Fair Oaks, California.

We met in Fair Oaks Village behind the Fair Oaks Coffee House and Deli before heading over to look at the building site.

As each of us introduced ourselves and shared what brought us there, the common theme was about community, fellowship, and feeling connected.

Some of us reminisced about growing up in neighborhoods without fences and how as kids we had to learn to cooperate and get along with one another.

Among us were a few retirees, empty nesters, a school teacher with young children, a woman with her teenaged daughter, a few single people, and a married couple. All interested in co-housing and thrilled that there’s one in Fair Oaks.

John, a future resident, is enthusiastic about the project. He is most excited about the workshop with tools and a place to do creative work.

Dennis has fond memories of living in a 52 person cooperative when she was a student in Berkley and was one of the first members of the Fair Oaks Eco-Community.

Bob, is one of the organizers already living in a co-housing community. His wife has Alzheimer’s and with that comes loneliness and isolation. He wanted a community that he can lean on at times and that’s why he joined.  It’s been an excellent move for him and his wife. The people have been wonderful to her.

Marty Maskall started the project for the Fair Oaks EcoHousing Community. She was carpooling with a friend, and she looked out his back window to see what his back yard looked like, but she saw all these nice homes with porches facing each other. He also had a front porch facing the street. She noticed that one of the homes was bigger than the others.

She asked, “What is this?” and he said, “Co-housing.” She said, “Co-what?” He explained that it’s a balance of privacy and community. Privacy in your home, and the community at your doorstep. “That was all it took for me!” says Marty. “I was like, I want to live that way but I don’t want to move downtown, and they don’t have any openings anyway, and I thought to myself, it can’t be that hard to start a co-housing community.” She laughs. “But luckily, I didn’t know; and so 15 years later.”

Martie hoding up the site and landscape plans for Fair Oaks Eco Housing

“In life, if we’d really known all the obstacles we would have maybe gotten a little afraid, but I didn’t have enough sense to be afraid,” she says. “Now it’s such a joy to see the smiles on peoples faces when they get it! Just like that!”

“This is a concept whose time has come! I can’t move in fast enough!”

What are cohousing neighborhoods?

Cohousing neighborhoods are composed of privately-owned homes clustered around shared open space and common facilities. A “common house” typically includes a dining room, kitchen, lounge, workshop space, kid’s playroom, and guest rooms; it is the heart of the neighborhood for a variety of other activities.

At the time of this article, they were down to two homes left and an offer was coming in that day.

Learn all about the project and the history of how it all began by visiting the Fair Oaks EcoHousing website.

Helping the Senior Population of Fair Oaks Live Safely at Home

December 21, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

images of wrist bands and electronic care giver devices

We recently had Dot Boyd as our guest on Fair Oaks Live to educate us about the importance of this life-saving device. Most aging adults want to maintain their independence and having this device makes it safe for them to live alone while giving their family and loved one’s peace of mind. .

Saftey is a concern for all of us, and the electronic caregiver can be there for you in a second that someone approaches and makes you feel afraid or grabs you. It is equipped with a GPS so your where abouts are known and help can get to you. If you have children, it’s a great device for them to wear so that you know where they are at all times and they can press for help in emergency.

“Our mission is to preserve the independence and extend the life of the large population of people at risk of incident, incapacitation or death, due to the effects of physical challenges, disabilities, serious illness or aging. We empower seniors and those with serious health concerns with the ability to live at home. We also protect them from the often-catastrophic consequences of unattended injuries.”

– Tony Dohrmann, CEO of ECG

To learn more about the Electronic Caregiver, visit Dot Boyd’s website.

Fair Oaks Image Consultant, Jacqueline Gorre

December 6, 2018 By Chrysti Tovani

hot pink hat at the cinderella complex boutique in fair oaks village

Hello Fair Oaks!

The clothing we wear can transform us and give us confidence. But how do you know what’s the best look on you? Some of us have a natural knack for style, and some of us could use a boost. Or a boot. I love boots. But I digress.

I walked into CinderELLA Complex, greeted by the vivacious Jacqueline. I wasn’t even sure anything on the racks would fit me, but there were some cute blouses, and she brought over some pants, and I had fun trying on clothes. There were some gorgeous shoes and purses too. I walked out with three blouses and two purses for myself and two cocktail dresses for my niece. All of the items were under $10 each. Some were from her special sale rack in the back of the store. She has beautiful clothes in her shop.

She pulled pieces together for me that I wouldn’t have thought of wearing. And I loved it! I tend to be stuck in my look which is okay, but it’s a real treat to have a fashion consultant give you a wardrobe makeover. I felt like I was playing dress-up which is precisely what the name CinderELLA Complex means to Jacqueline. She says that as children we play, and it should feel the same way now.

Jacqueline has an eye for discovering the treasures hidden in the racks of some of the best boutiques in San Francisco, traveling there regularly to bring back designer clothing to sell in her store, CinderELLA Complex. An image consultant as well as a clothing shop owner, she is passionate about empowering her clients with confidence and their uniqueness. What we wear can transform us.

You can visit Jacqueline at CinderELLA Complex located in Fair Oaks Village, next to the Village Salon. It’s the building with the large chicken mural.

If you feel the need for a new look, or improving your image, Jacquline offers professional workshops on enhancing our appearance and also works one on one with clients on image makeovers, including fitness and nutrition routines. She will help you embrace your natural beauty and the transformation enhancing your whole being and self-esteem.

Jacquline believes that when we feel and look our best, we begin to project positive energy and that affects everything we do, and that includes our business and personal life. Fashion isn’t superficial. It’s the essence of who we are, and we should embrace our best selves.

Let’s show some LOVE to the business in Fair Oaks Village by sharing this. We’ll put the link to the GIVEAWAY as soon as we go live!

Follow CinderELLA Complex on Instagram and Facebook!

Fair Oaks Theatre Festival

Opening Night of Mary Poppins at Fair Oaks Theatre Festival – Photo by Chrysti Tovani

If Fair Oaks is considered the crown of the Sacramento Valley, the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival is one of the most incredible jewels. Enjoy fun, friendly, and affordable entertainment under the stars brought to you by outstanding volunteers and a fantastic ensemble of talented actors and performers.

I loved Mary Poppins at the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater. We are blessed to have our Theater group in Fair Oaks. We started with an ice cream and champagne social for opening night. Mary Poppins was the first movie my mom took me to see in a theater as a child and it was magical.

Journey Revisited at Fair Oaks Theatre Festival Summer 2018 – Photo by Chrysti Tovani

I had the pleasure of jamming to live music of the greatest bands in my lifetime. We kicked off the concert series with Journey Revisited – A Tribute to the Music of Journey. With songs like, Don’t Stop Believin’, Wheel in the Sky, Any Way You Want It; we had to dance!

Steelin’ Dan – The Music of Steely Dan at Fair Oaks Theatre Festival Summer 2018 – Photo by Chrysti Tovani

Next up was Steelin’ Dan – the Music of Steely Dan. With sophisticated rock and funky jazz sounds of Steely Dan, we danced under the stars to Reelin’ in the Years, Hey Nineteen, Dirty Work, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number and other classic hits. This band nailed it! Lead singer, Sandford Wragg, and the band conquered! One of the best performances of the summer! After the show, some of us walked over to Stockman’s in Fair Oaks Village and had a drink with the band. It was a fantastic night! If you get a chance to see Steelin’ Dan perform, do it! Visit the Steelin’ Dan website and find out where they’re playing next.

Last of the concert series was Boys of Summer Eagles Tribute Band. They played to a sold-out crowd.

What’s playing at the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival in 2019?

  • June 14th to July 14th, 2019 is Gilligan’s Island
  • August 9th to September 8th, 2019 is Mama Mia

Every year from June through August/September there are plays, concerts, and comedy nights. Tickets are available for purchase online, and you can pick them up at the box office before the show. It’s best to buy tickets early because they sell out fast. You can sign up to know as soon as tickets go on sale.

Follow The Fair Oaks Theatre Festival on Facebook. During the year they partner with other community organizations to produce family-friendly events like Safe Halloween, Winnie the Pooh Christmas Show and a St. Patrick’s Day Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner.
